The first day of May starts in a fog and finishes with another round of scattered showers and storms. Do those bring June flowers?
The morning weather map shows a front that moved through yesterday late afternoon and evening just to the south of Indianapolis. Behind that front, and that rain, the sky had cleared. That clearing – combined with the recent rainfall – caused fog to form in some parts of the state.
Yesterday’s rain (the last for those May flowers) brought exactly one-half inch of precipitation to the Indianapolis Airport. Almost a third of that fell between 5 and 6pm. Nothing like drive time wipers on stun, huh?
Most of the Indy metro area saw one half to one inch of rain, but totals were higher in both northern and southern Indiana. The radar analyses shows up to two inches fell from around Louisville to just north of Jasper and Vincennes. There was some minor wind damage in my old stomping grounds of Huntington county in northeast Indiana, near Markle. You know, not far from the old “Don’s Truck Stop” on I-69.
You may have to motor through showers and storms for the second afternoon drive in a row. As the aforementioned front moves northward it will help to focus the ingredients for scattered stuff this afternoon and evening. Nothing severe, but there definitely could be heavy rain, gusty winds and small hail.
That front keeps pushing northward and so Wednesday and Thursday we will be solidly in the warm sector of the overall system, free from Mister Weatherman nagging you about scattered storms. Indianapolis may break a record tomorrow. The current record high for May 2 is 87, from 1959. We should also get the warmest days of the year so far this week. Really! Even warmer than March! The top temp so far has been 84. We reached it on March 21 and April 3. It was the ONLY 80 degree day in April.
I’ve now procrastinated on the precipitation. The chance doesn’t start until Friday, and now goes through the weekend. Stay tuned, and stay hydrated. It definitely will be a toasty trip of 13.1 miles.
Yesterday’s rain brought Indy’s April total to 3.36″ which is about a half-inch below average. The year to date total is 12.36. The average is 12.35!
I hope you day is farther above average than that.
