No Wind Advisory for Indianapolis today. We’ve finally banished the breeze. It left town in a hurry. At 5pm Monday the Airport was still noting a gust of 26 mph. By 7pm, down to 8 mph. The wind went “calm” at 2am, and shouldn’t get above about 5 mph today, from the west.
The highest sustained wind speed Monday was 37 mph, and the highest gust was 45 mph. Sunday and Monday were the two windiest days of the month so far.
The Indianapolis rainfall total Monday hit .44 of an inch. That puts us at 2.34″ for the month, and the normal is 1.96. The tall drink of water Saturday and Monday also boosted our year-to-date total to 11.34, compared to a normal of 10.50 inches. All the more impressive considering the considerable snow deficit. Just in case you forgot, the snow total never got into double digits. Still 9.8 inches, compared to a 25.9 average, and 37.4 inches last year.
This may be hard to believe in the USA, where people were working on their summer tans last month…but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the world as a whole had its coolest March since 1999. La Niña gets the credit, or blame, depending on how you’re looking at it.
A little La Niña would have gone a long way at the Boston Marathon yesterday. Temperatures jumped from 81 degrees at 10 a.m. when the elite men and first wave of runners set off, to a high of 89 degrees by just past noon. Last year the high was 58. For the last couple of years before that: upper 40s. Officials said it was one of the top-10 hottest in the 116-year running of the race.
Wesley Korir of Kenya won in 2 hours, 12 minutes, 40 seconds, which, believe it or not, was the second-slowest Boston victory since 1985. Last year’s winner, Geoffrey Mutai, also from Kenya, ran the fastest marathon in history (2:03:02) but he dropped out yesterday after 18 miles with stomach cramps.
Two days before the race, officials offered one-year deferments so the runners would automatically be qualified to run there next year, and about 400 participants took them up on it. Organizers sent runners an email over the weekend to run “significantly more slowly” than planned, and adopt the attitude that “THIS IS NOT A RACE. It is an experience.” Of course, for SOME of us runners, that always has to be the case:)
BTW, the Race organizers had twice as much water on hand compared to last year.
No rain water around here until probably Thursday evening. A front will hang out until later Friday night with shower and storm chances. Behind it: a sharply colder weekend. We have our own area Marathon on Saturday in Carmel. Runners should appreciate the temperatures, but not the wind. I thinks it’s going to be breezy again. In case all else fails: It is an experience!
