Welcome to March! There were exactly two days in February when the Indy temp was 60 or higher. The first day, and the last. Yesterday’s high of 69 missed the Leap Day record by just 5 degrees. That record is safe until at least 2016. Yesterday was also Indy’s warmest since November 14. And the real test of Spring Fever? People were eating outside at lunch.
It won’t be *that* warm today, but at least it will be quieter. Winds and clouds will diminish through the morning. Unfortunately it looks like this week will bring two big severe weather outbreaks across the country. The Storm Prediction has already placed most of Indiana under a slight risk for severe storms Friday, and much of the southern half of the state is under a moderate risk. The most likely time for bad weather tomorrow will be in the afternoon and early evening, and again tomorrow there is a risk for all types of severe weather, including tornadoes.
So…enjoy today’s relative peace and quiet, I guess we’ll say March comes in “like a lamb” here Indiana. That means, supposedly, it goes out like a lion. If you’re old enough you may remember a Saturday Night Live Weekend Update bit from the 1970’s where “meteorologist John Belushi” described the many ways March comes and goes around the world: “Consider the Republic of South Africa where March comes in like a lion and goes out like a different lion. Like one has a mane, and one doesn’t have a mane. Or in certain parts of South America where March swims in like a sea otter, and then it slithers out like a giant anaconda.” Belushi did not have the Seal Of Approval of the American Meteorological Society.
