Happy high pressure to you. The big “H” on the weather map starts the day in Ohio and controls today’s forecast with a a generally clear sky for the state. The contrast of that high to the east and the next “low,” a storm system in the Plains will stir up big breezes again today. Expect gusts up to 35 mph in the midday and afternoon. Good news? Those will be southerly winds, rotating clockwise around the aforementioned “high.” That means we go back above average today.
The Plains low drags a cold front through Indiana overnight tonight, with no rain or snow effect. It will knock temps back closer to normal Monday. The next best rain chances is Tuesday night, as a stronger “low” moves out of the Plains toward Wisconsin. Yet another system will bring mainly rain Friday.
Matt Lipan, or @mattlipan on Twitter, is the lead Pastor at @SunriseIndy, a United Methodist church in the Geist/Oaklandon area. He in the pulpit today speaking about Noah and the Flood, and last night he wrote me to ask what is the most amount of rain we’ve gotten in the shortest amount of time, just for the sake of comparison. You may remember that rain, as it wasn’t all that long ago. Indy recorded 7.2 inches in one day…September 1, 2003. By contrast, we’ve had just under 4 and a half inches of precipitation for the entire year, so far.
Indy records only go back a couple of hundred years, but within that time I can tell you it’s never rained for 40 days and 40 nights, but we did have 39 consecutive DRY days in August and September of 1908. There have been as many as 13 consecutive days with measurable precipitation. That was in April of 1893.
