This time the heavy rain was confined to the southern part of the state, with over two inches drenching an area from around Vincennes to near Seymour.
Extensive river flooding will continue in western and southern Indiana through March 15. Flood crests in the lowest reaches of the White, Wabash and East Fork White Rivers will be the highest since June 2008. Major flooding, as experienced in June 2008, will not occur. Many local roads will be flooded for more than a week. Motorists should use alternate high ground routes.
On Wednesday afternoon…the greatest rises along area rivers was in Bedford, Williams, Shoals, Hazleton, Mount Carmel and New Harmony areas. This was caused by a combination of the arrival of high water from central Indiana and locally heavy rainfall of an inch or slightly more in the southern portions of the Wabash River Basin. Rainfall of less than one half of an inch fell north of a line from Sullivan, Indiana to Richmond, Indiana.
The crest in the lower reaches of the White and Wabash will last 3 to 5 days. Extensive flooding will continue along the White and Wabash Rivers in southwest Indiana through March 15. Flooding will likely continue along portions of the White and Wabash Rivers in southwest Indiana into early April.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the crest on the Wabash River was approaching Vincennes, the crest on the White River was approaching Edwardsport and the crest on the East Fork White River was in the Medora area.
Significant flooding impacts numerous local and state roads, extensive agricultural land and some residential areas.
