Snow Forecast Map

4:00 PM – All Warnings Ended
Winds will ease going into the evening, and accumulating snow has ended. Storm totals were generally 4-6 inches in Central Indiana, including exactly 4.0″ at Indianapolis.

12:00 PM – Storm Warning Extended
The Weather Service has extended the Winter Storm Warning until 7pm for much of the state, because of blowing and drifting in open areas.  Several counties are advising against travel  Click the map for a bigger view.

You can see the persistent area of light snow drawing on Lake Michigan’s moisture, and being pulled into Central Indiana on frisky northwest winds.

4:00 AM Wednesday – Blowing snow morning and midday–still another inch possible north/northeast of Indy. Highs mid 20′s, winds gusting to 35mph.  Storm warning will continue this morning for much of Central Indiana, and until this evening in the northeastern corner.  Looks like the storm total in Indy will be about 4 inches, around 5 Muncie/Anderson, around 6 Marion/Logansport, less to the southwest of Indy…around 4-5 southeast of Indianapolis.

10:30 PM - Blowing and drifting.  Some updated totals: 5″ in Peru, almost 6″ at WLFI Television in West Lafayette

6:30 PMWinds are kicking.  Chill just below zero this hour in Indianapolis.  More light to sometimes moderate snow w/blowing-drifting all night for Indiana.

4:50 PMWinds are getting more gusty.  Chills are down in the teens already.

3:45 PM – Afternoon drive will be better than morning drive in the the Indy metro.  Another 1 to 3 inches of snow is likely this evening through tomorrow morning, on top of (on average) 3 inches so far (more has fallen in southeast Indiana.)  Total accumulation forecast through the metro area is, therefore, still 4-8, but the likely number for Indy is around 5 or 6 inches total.  Highest amounts will be in the northern third, and east-southeast corner of the state.  But the BIG problem will be blowing/drifting late this evening and tomorrow morning, due to 30-35mph wind gusts.

11:45 AMNo, we’re not done yet. The low pressure at the surface is creeping toward Cleveland. (Poor low.) That’s the feature that spurred the moderate snow during the morning drive.

Another upper level low (the closed circle you see on the charts) is headed our way for late afternoon and tonight, and that will continue to add to the snow totals.  See how close all the lines are around that circle?  That indicates the 35mph gusts expected late tonight, and during the day Wednesday.  That’s why the Warning remains.
